Webinar: July 30, 2020: How a Communication Platform Can Streamline Surgery Center Operations

Ambulatory Surgery Centers (ASCs) have diverse and dispersed physicians and can therefore face many challenges in coordinating schedules and optimizing workflows. Effective communication between staff members and with patients and their families is essential. Those challenges have become even more difficult during the COVID-19 pandemic. One of the ways that successful ASCs have overcome these challenges is by adopting a secure, HIPAA-compliant telehealth, texting, and collaboration platform. These platforms improve communication between doctors and healthcare staff, help with the coordination of schedules and streamlining of workflows, and make it easy for ASCs to provide telehealth visits and communicate with patients and families pre- and post-op. During the COVID-19 pandemic, these platforms have played an important role in keeping ASCs open and safe. On Thursday, July 30, 2020, Dr. Andrew Brooks, Chief Medical Officer, TigerConnect, will be hosting a webinar and will provide insights gained from his work as an orthopedic surgeon and founder of seven successful ASCs. WEBINAR 6/24: How a Top ACO Drives Better Outcomes with Communication

Accountable care organizations (ACOs) have to overcome many communication challenges to improve collaboration, efficiency, reduce costs, and deliver better quality care. Those challenges have been made even more difficult during the COVID-19 crisis. Telehealth Set to Stay so it’s Time to Get the Right Technology

This year, in response to the COVID-19 public health emergency, the HHS’ Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) expanded coverage of telehealth service to include all Medicare beneficiaries, regardless of location. Telehealth services eliminate the barriers to in-person care that have been created by the COVID-19 pandemic and allow practitioners to provide treatment to patients in their own homes and, by doing so, improve patient safety and control the spread of COVID-19. The expansion of coverage only applies during the coronavirus public health emergency, although calls have been increasing for the expanded CMS telehealth policies to continue after the public health emergency is declared over. On June 9, 2020, in a virtual event on STAT News, CMS Administrator Seema Verma said she supported the permanent expansion of access to telehealth services. The FTC has also weighed, with executives expressing their support for the permanent removal of the geographical restrictions and continued expansion of the types of services that can be delivered by telehealth. On May 21, 32...

Improving Communication with Patients During the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency

With lockdown measures in place to prevent the spread of the 2019 Novel Coronavirus, health systems have expanded their telehealth services to provide care to more patients at home. Rather than have patients travel to hospitals and healthcare clinics, clinicians can make diagnoses and provide treatment to patients remotely using text messaging platforms and videoconferencing applications. The HHS’ Office for Civil Rights issued a Notice of Enforcement Discretion in March confirming financial penalties will not be imposed on healthcare providers in relation to the good faith provision of telehealth services. OCR explained that it is permissible to use everyday communications solutions for providing telehealth services during the COVID-19 public health emergency, even if those platforms are not fully HIPAA-complaint. While penalties for noncompliance may not be imposed for using these platforms, OCR warned that these consumer-grade platforms may introduce privacy risks, which patients should be made aware of. To ensure patient privacy and the security of any ePHI collected or...

How One Company is Helping to Drive Down the Cost of U.S. Healthcare and Improve Patient Outcomes

2019 Health Statistics published by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development’s (OECD) show healthcare expenditures in the United States are significantly higher than those in other developed countries. A 2018 Harvard study of 11 developed countries showed the United States had the highest healthcare costs relative to its GDP out of all 11 countries studied. Per capita healthcare spending was found to be almost twice that of other wealthy, developed countries. Higher costs are not necessarily bad if they translate into better patient outcomes, but the OECD figures show that is not the case. The United States performed poorly for patient outcomes, even though the costs of healthcare are so high. Reducing the cost of healthcare is a major challenge and there is no silver bullet, but there are ways for costs to be reduced and for patient outcomes to be improved. The Trump Administration is committed to reducing the cost of healthcare through executive orders and HHS rulings. In November 2018 an executive order – Improving Price and Quality Transparency in...

Solving the Communication Problems in Healthcare

Solving the Communication Problems in Healthcare

52% of healthcare organizations experience communications disconnects that negatively impact patients daily or multiple times a week, according to a recent study by TigerConnect. These communication problems are more than a cause of frustration for healthcare employees. They make care coordination difficult and lead to lapses in care. In fact, the impact of poor communication is far reaching and affects the entire organization. At best, communication inefficiency causes delays that increase the cost of healthcare provision. At worst, poor communication contributes to preventable medical errors, physician burnout and, in the most extreme cases, it can lead to death. Many healthcare facilities are still heavily reliant on outdated communication technology such as pagers and fax machines. Groups of healthcare employees use different tools to communicate and, even with a growing mobile workforce, landlines are relied upon far too frequently. TigerConnect research has shown that communication channels in hospitals are badly fragmented. 89% of hospitals are still using fax machines and...

TigerConnect Survey Finds 89% of Healthcare Providers Still Use Fax Machines and 39% are Still Using Pagers

TigerConnect has released its 2019 State of Healthcare Communications Report, which shows that continuing reliance on decades-old, inefficient communications technology is negatively impacting patients and is contributing to the increasing cost of healthcare provision. For the report, TigerConnect surveyed more than 2,000 patients and 200 healthcare employees to assess the current state of communications in healthcare and gain insights into areas where communication inefficiencies are causing problems. The responses clearly show that communication in healthcare is broken. 52% of healthcare organizations are experiencing communication disconnects that impact patients on a daily basis or several times a week. Those communication inefficiencies are proving frustrating for healthcare employees and patients alike. The report reveals most hospitals are still heavily reliant on communications technology from the 1970s. 89% of hospitals still use faxes and 39% are still using pagers in some departments, roles, or even across the entire organization. The world may have moved on, but...

TigerText Launches HealthBot Capable of Automating the Provision of Healthcare Information to Patients

TigerText has launched a new secure, HIPAA-compliant, messenger service for web portals and mobile applications which automates a wide range of tasks that previously required the time of support staff. All too often patients face extended wait times when calling hospitals and other healthcare facilities and hold times in excess of 30 minutes are far from uncommon. Obtaining answers to questions and making routine appointments is rarely a quick process, causing considerable frustration for patients. Patient web portals are a convenient way of communicating with patients more efficiently, yet healthcare staff are still required to man the web portals. Many of the questions asked by patients via web portals can be easily handled by a messenger bot. Automating these services can reduce patient waiting times and provide patients with instant answers to their questions. With the cost of healthcare expected to increase by 5.8% each year, healthcare organizations need to find new ways to improve efficiency and lower operational costs. Messenger bots can allow patients to receive...

TigerText Launches Healthcare Pager and Fax Replacement

TigertText has announced the release of two new communication solutions for healthcare providers. The two new products have clear potential, and could convince many healthcare providers to start phasing out pagers and faxes. The new products, named TigerPage & TigerFax, are aimed at healthcare providers that would like to transition to a more secure, HIPAA-compliant method of communication but who are reluctant to give up the communication tools they have relied on for decades. Rather than totally replacing pagers and faxes, the new solutions allow them to continue to be used. If fact, the speed and efficiency that pages and faxes can be received and responded to is greatly improved. Rather than carrying a pager and a Smartphone, healthcare workers can have pages and faxes sent directly to their Smartphone.
