Fortinet Launches New Operational Technology Security Solution for Critical Infrastructure Organizations

Cyberattacks on critical infrastructure are becoming much more common. Cybersecurity reports suggest SCADA/ICS security breaches have been experienced by more than 50% of critical infrastructure organizations in the past 12 months alone. Those attacks can result in major disruption to essential services including energy, water, and healthcare.

Unfortunately, there are major differences between traditional information technology and operational technology (OT). Consequently, most enterprise-class security solutions do not have visibility into OT systems due to the highly specialized nature of the technology. Without visibility, it is not possible to effectively defend against cyberattacks on OT systems.

However, Fortinet has now developed a security solution that addresses the unique challenges of protecting operational technology. Its latest offering unifies the management and administration of both OT and IT via the Fortinet Security Fabric.

The Fortinet Security Fabric allows organizations to deploy advanced cybersecurity controls to keep their OT systems, control systems, and data secure. The Fortinet Security Fabric is delivered through a range of robust devices that are capable of coping with extreme weather and tough industrial environments while providing enterprise-class security and connectivity.

Fortinet’s Operational Technology Security solution includes firewalls, wireless APs, and switches that are protected by FortiGuard industrial threat intelligence. The appliances offer integrated cybersecurity protections for SCADA and ICS systems in non-environmentally controlled facilities across an organization’s entire infrastructure.

The devices run on the FortiOS secure operating system and include the recently announced FortiGuard Industrial Security Services, which delivers application control, threat intelligence, and signatures specific to industrial and critical infrastructure organizations. Via the Fortinet appliances, organizations can benefit from advanced segmentation and malware protection unique to OT networks, irrespective of their operating environment.

Fortinet has also announced that via its Fabric-Ready Partner Program, organizations can easily integrate complimentary third-part security solutions with the Fortinet Security Fabric.

The series of OT security solutions include the FortiGate Rugged Series of firewalls, the FortiSwitch Rugged Series of switches, and the FortiAP Outdoor Series of WiFi Access Points.
